Ce tableau représente une scène en bord de rivière, certainement en fin de journée. A gauche, le cours d’eau reflète très joliment les lumières des réverbères du pont de pierre et des arbres environnants. Le pont relie les deux rives et conduit l’œil vers l’arrière-plan, où l’on distingue les silhouettes lointaines de clochers qui semblent appartenir à une petite ville européenne.
À droite, un chemin légèrement surélevé longe la rive. Une femme y marche donnant la main à un jeune enfant. Derrière elle, plus loin un passant avance. Quelques maisons simples aux toits bruns se trouvent sur la droite. On a l’impression d’être à la périphérie d’une petite ville.
La palette est dominée par des bleus grisés et des verts subtils, avec des touches plus chaudes dans les terres et les toits. Le ciel, nuancé entre bleu et gris.
L’atmosphère rappelle certaines petites huiles sur carton de la fin du XIXᵉ ou du début du XXᵉ siècle, où l’artiste cherche moins la précision que la sensation : la lumière, la vie ordinaire, la poésie d’un paysage simple.
